What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of staying focused fully in the present moment. It has been briefly defined as “moment-to-moment non-judgmental awareness”. This means keeping your attention on the experience of each moment as it occurs without thinking about it. An ever more brief description of mindfulness is “Be here, now”.

Though it sounds simple, the busy nature of the mind makes it take considerable effort. Part of this process is being aware of judgments, reflections, and expectations when they do occur. With practice at it through mindfulness meditation, it does become easier. The beauty of mindfulness is that it can be practiced as a formal meditation or informally applied to any activity undertaken, including driving.
